Welcome to our website! We are Sticky Rice & Scone, a couple of keen travellers that met in 2023 and bonded over our love of in-depth travel and food research. It always felt like a waste to leave our carefully planned itineraries and surprising on-the-spot discoveries collecting dust in our laptops. From this thought, Sticky Rice & Scone was born!
On our site, you can find a range of itineraries, food guides, and activity recommendations, all based on our personal experiences.
But what sets us apart from the thousands of other travel and food blogs out there? Great question!
1.
We write from both Asian and European perspectives Our name reflects our different backgrounds: Sticky Rice was born in Thailand to a culturally Chinese family, while Scone grew up in the UK in a Ukrainian household. We have also both lived in many places: across the last decade, Sticky Rice worked in the US, Japan, Singapore, Sweden, and Ireland, and Scone taught and did research in England, Italy, Turkey, and Switzerland, but we met in Germany, where we now live with our two bunnies. Our trips and posts always reflect the blending of these experiences to give us a unique, cross-cultural perspective.
PS: we also love the cute style of logos you find at many street food restaurants in Thailand. That’s what inspired our own logo!

We have not quit our jobs to travel = Our guides are geared towards maximising your time There’s a trend of people leaving their jobs to travel the world, and that’s great for some people. Sadly, it’s not for us. That said, we strongly believe that you can have frequent fulfilling vacations alongside a full-time job, and the proof is in this website. With anything from a day to a few weeks, or whatever you can get booked off, you can really have a great time away. Our goal is to show you how we have done exactly this and help you to maximise your own trips, so you can see the best things at the best price in the best amount of time possible!

Our jobs and interests = Our guides are a mix of local and unique experiences Sticky Rice works in Product Development, and Scone as a university lecturer and historian. Both jobs require in-depth research to understand why people do certain things and what people value to boost their lives, cultures, and overall happiness. These requirements naturally translate into us doing lots of planning before we leave, creating a lot of documentation, and also a sensitive travel style, where we always go out of our way to ‘travel like a local’.
As overused as this phrase is, it really sums up what we do best. To get a better understanding of a place, we like mix up unique activities, like paramotoring in Vang Vieng or a hands-on lesson in Malay cooking in Cape Town, with more local experiences that tourists don’t often think to do, such as visiting Poland’s best sauna in Poznań, eating a deep-fried pizza in Glasgow, or motorbiking between Chiang Dao’s ricefields. We always mix up our travel, as we feel that balancing the local with the extraordinary gives us and you the best insight into a new place and the local culture.
If that all sounds interesting to you, then we think you’ll like our site! We upload new pages frequently and occaisonally update old ones, and we try to travel a few times a year. So, we hope you’ll find something that’s helpful in our various guides. And if we haven’t gotten to where you’re planning to visit, check back in a few weeks, as we might have by that point!
